The Roadwardens

What people know

The Roadwardens are a loose, old, underfunded order that keeps the roads between Restrend’s 80+ settlements passable and safe. They are guides, escorts, waystation keepers, herbalists, rangers, druids, monster hunters. The medieval day version of a park ranger.

Reputation

  • Their members are often not the most glamorous looking. Often considered to be comprised of “misfits”, “outcasts”, or “oddities”.
  • Given their network and coverage, the local Roadwarden tends to have a lot of intel on “goings on” of their particular area or can leverage their network to find out more about a different region.

Structure

They operate mainly off of geographical areas, and have ranks which match:

  • Footpath: A conscript, entry level position. Typically given very little territory to guard or are shadowing a higher rank.
  • Lantern: A probationary rank which leads to the Warden rank. Literally one who must carry the lantern at night and keep it lit to prove they are not afraid of attracting danger.
  • Warden: Sworn member with real territory responsibility. Has at least a stretch of road they must protect.

What’s less known

  • They have ranks above “Warden”, but most people don’t know the faction well enough to know these or their responsibilities.
  • The Roadwardens don’t care what you are, they care whether the road is safe behind you.
