Description

The largest city on the continent — a proud, ancient capital that sprawls along both banks of a wide river, its skyline dominated by the Citadel at its center where the Keystone pulses with faint light. Grand stone bridges arch over the water, connecting districts that range from gleaming arcane towers and noble estates to densely packed lower wards where the streets are narrow and the magic is practical rather than pretty. Everything here feels layered — old stone beneath new construction, ancient traditions beneath modern ambition.

The Resonance

Astran is governed by a system unlike any other — the Resonance. At the heart of the Citadel sits the Keystone, a massive crystalline structure of unknown origin that predates the city itself. The Keystone absorbs the collective emotional energy of Astran’s citizens and produces shifting harmonic tones and light patterns.

Each year, a new group of Listeners is selected — citizens who demonstrate an innate ability to sense the Keystone’s patterns. The selection process is public and rigorous: aspirants stand with their backs to the Keystone while it displays sigils to a citizen audience. Those who can accurately repeat what the crystal shows without observing it are deemed attuned and serve as Listeners for the year.

The Listeners interpret the Keystone’s resonance into policy — taxation, defense, trade agreements, justice. It is not a vote and not a decree. It is, the people of Astran largely believe, the collective will of the city made manifest.

What’s Known

Astran is the capital of Restrend and the most populous city on Deros. It has stood for centuries, growing around the Keystone and the Citadel that houses it. The city is a melting pot — every species, trade, and tradition on the continent has a foothold here.
